Lack Of Management Support For Team

Q. I am on a team where I work. Our team is now working on our second project. The trouble is that management was not very supportive of our first project, and now the team members are angry and have no motivation to tackle the second project. What can we do?

A.Our study of teams, that competed for the Governor's quality award in Ohio, revealed your complaint to be the most serious mistake management can make. Management support is vital to building team morale. You do not say why management support is lacking for your first project. Perhaps there are good reasons. Possibly funding was not available. Possibly customers needs point to other priorities.

The missing link implied in your question is the absence of face to face discussion with management about why support appears weak and about how this is affecting motivation to tackle a second project. Someone must stick out his or her neck and bring about a meeting with management.
