Demoralizing Boss Makes Work Sour!

Q. My boss has become increasingly more difficult to the point where I dread going to work almost daily. The typical day begins well until she arrives and without saying "hello" or acknowledging anyone, she begins to question everything and everybody.

Her usual comments to me conclude with "I guess I can't expect everyone to have the brain I do or to be able to apply it here at work." I find this very demeaning and demoralizing. My patients have actually made comments about her behavior. Any advice?

A. Dear Demoralized:

I don't blame you.  No boss should belittle and demean those within her charge.  Either you as an individual or a cluster of you who are insulted should speak up.  Tell her to address you with respect.  Tell her that she is coming across as a one who is soured on life.  Tell her you and your coworkers need her support and want a boss who seeks their ideas.  Tell her that an ounce of honey is far better than a gallon of vinegar.

Too often medical people, I’ve have observed, take on the roles of drill sergeants or God's gift to management.  You are not in the army.  Say so.  Tell her that her style of bossing has made you hate to come to work. Say so with determination.  Say so with a pledge to do good work and in kind to return that for considerate and supportive bossing.

Getting to Workplace WEGO cannot happen without the rule of civility and respect.
