Afraid Of Rude Complaints!

Q. I have recently been offered a job involving a lot of phone work. The job involves answering incoming calls and attempting to resolve their complaints. I really do not want to do a job like this, but it is a last resort, as it is the only job that I have been offered in over four months that actually relates to my qualification that I have recently completed.

I know it won't be forever, but I am very scared that I may not be able to stick it out. I am very sensitive to people being rude and obnoxious, and I think that any job like this will surely be placing me directly in the firing line. When people have upset me in other jobs like this, I don't know how to react and I find myself feeling like I want to run out of the room in tears and never go back. I can't afford to mess this up. Do you have any suggestions on how I can deal with this situation?

Signed,

Got Nerves

A. Dear Got Nerves:

New jobs are stressful. You do not want to mess up. That causes more stress. You are a sensitive person who does not want to break down in tears. That causes more stress. This job is the last resort because you have been looking and this is the only job you have been offered in four months. That causes more stress.

So you are stressed. So what! What will happen if you do mess up? What if you do let some pain in the backside bring you to tears? Will you drop dead? Will you have a panic attack and can't breathe? I doubt it. So put on you best I will take this job with a positive attitude and dress in your I look good and if they don't like it that's their problem outfit. Take that last resort job and if it does not work out, consider it a learning experience.

Does this sound sensible?

If we do what we have to do with a can do attitude, we sometimes surprise ourselves and WEGO happily forward.
