Hellp! I Can't Spel!

Q. I am a 50-year-old male who has been hampered my whole life by my horable spelling and feel that I have been passed over for some good jobs because of it. The embarassment also has caused me to avoid expressing my thoughts and feeling in meny life situations, sometimes makeing me seem uncaring or selfish to others, if only they new. My question is where or how do I go about seeking help to improve my spelling any help would be welcome. thanks.

A. Dear Spelling Bee:

It is great first step that your realize the importance of proper spelling and grammar and your own limitations. Here at the Workplace Doctors Site we get many questions riddled with poor spelling and grammar - even from top level managers! Being conscientious about your spelling and grammar will help you become better focused on all the little details of your job. So where can you go for help? Here are a few suggestions:

Many community colleges and universities offer courses in business writing. You don't need to pursue a degree to take a course that you think might better your communication skills at work. I suggest you call your local community college and talk with someone in the business or English departments and tell them exactly what you'd like to learn. They can help you select the right course.

Use the spell checker on your computer. Most people spell check a document and then go on without thinking about it. Newer versions of programs like MS Word and WordPerfect highlight misspelled words as you type. Rather than just fixing the errors and moving on, keep a journal of the words you misspelled and practice using those words in future documents. Although learning to spell correctly is a matter of knowing prefixes, suffixes and rules of grammar, practice and correction also play a part in tuning your skills.

There are numerous books on how to improve your spelling. . .

Look these up at Amazon.com or ask about them at your local bookstore:

You can also look up spelling games at Amazon or visit your local computer store. You should be able to find one that matches your learning needs and can be fun at the same time. Remember, you can't become a better speller overnight. So have patience and perseverance.

WEGO is always mindful of self-improvement!
