I'm Outta Here!
How Should I Resign?

Q. I have decided to resign my position and move on while I still have my youth and motivation.

Q. What is the best way to resign a position that one is not happy with?

Q. Would it be wrong to offer my resignation during the social hour following > the annual dinner and awards banquet?

Signed,

Young and Motivated

A.  Dear Y&M:

Before resigning, have you considered the reality that finding another job is easier if you are currently employed? Why not put your name in with a placement firm or two that targets young people at your level and get an offer in writing before you resign?

And when you do resign, don't burn your bridges. I suggest that you meet privately with the manager of your department or division to hand deliver your letter of resignation rather than springing it on them at a social hour. This letter should be brief and enable you to depart in good standing. In fact, you might request a letter of recommendation to put in your file. You do not need to state that you have taken another job at this point, but only that you are considering a position or two. You can withhold where, you may say, until it is final.

We appreciate your note and wish you well in this time of transition, hopefully to a better working environment. Please continue to keep us posted as to what works and does not work for you.

WEGO forward much faster with a strong footing behind us..
