I
am employed at a residential facility for mentally retarded adults. About 14
months ago, a co-worker was promoted as my supervisor. He supervises two homes
and about ten staff members. This is a very small agency. Ever since his
promotion, he has developed a huge ego as well as "Hitleresque"
supervisory strategies.
He is constantly bungling his job and then blaming his employees for his own mistakes. He has even gone so far as to discipline staff members for his own errors. In the eyes of upper management, he does no wrong. He is often confrontational, verbally abusive, and basically mean. He lies and does everything he can to conceal his own shortcomings. What should I do?
I have already given a six week resignation notice, but I feel that I can not resign without setting the record straight. I seem to be the only employee who has guts enough to complain, but I feel as though my complaints will hold no merit now that I am leaving. Another staff member suggested that we write a letter to his supervisor and have all of the disgruntled employees sign it. Is this wise? I have already brought these concerns to her in person, and nothing was done, should I go over her head as well? (I am now the 4th employee to resign as a direct result of my supervisor's behavior).
Signed,
Voting With My Feet
Dear Voting:
Unfortunately, some of those given authority manage as bullies. They almost sadistically enjoy lording over others. Your supervisor seems to have a bad case of blame-itis. Your one effort to voice your evaluation of him, you say did not take. The superior of your supervisor from hell thinks this guy can do no wrong, you say. Should you volunteer in an exit interview to bypass this supervisor's deaf superior?
It may do no good. Yet because you ask the question, it is clear that there is something within you that will not depart passively. So do what you feel you should do. Keep your faith in voice. Speak up. You apparently have already made your decision to work elsewhere. Bullies and liars should not live on with no report of their behavior.
WEGO is possible when we put our faith in voice.
